Independence is what? Freedom + 3 reviews: Cinders, Kuncytes, and Pasco. New releases and more
Last night I walked down to the field by the local high school to see the fireworks that annually commemorate our great nation. There hadn't been any last year due to Covid. The years before in my old city there had been no fireworks for quite a few years. Expense was cited but it was whispered there had been too much violence from people who came from other communities and it was getting harder to police. So it was a delight to see them and to know that in many areas of our country it's been so dry that they are banned due to a fire risk.
There were families with coolers on the big lawn, across the streets in shuttered businesses seated in lawn chair. Oddly enough, I found a stone seat at the Veteran's Memorial so readers of my short story "The Figment" in Kaleidoscope Hearts 3 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WK6C5RX/might say Rafe Johnson was looking out for me.
But what is this freedom and independence we celebrate? Are we truly free enough to think or act for ourselves or must it always be grouped and guided.
That deeper thought came to me about what we celebrate. Independence and freedom. We have more freedoms than many previous generations, but we are still restricted, judged and bullied (or ostracized) if we go down a path that isn't mainstream. In other words, one can step out of a belief, political ideology, or social construct with less worry but only seek truth in pre-selected alternate choices that demand adherents follow their own set of rules.
In my opinion, we still aren't free to be individuals. We're only free to change groups or to be sorted differently. We say we yearn for freedom and independence from the status quo, but how much of it we gain depends on how much structure or acceptance we truly crave. We want to find others who share our opinions, but in doing so, do we sacrifice the right to our own freedom and choices?
Isolation of Covid showed us many things. Some of us were unchanged because we hadn't been that dependent on socialization as others. Some used the time as a vacation from others thoughts and took the time to analyze where they were in life and if they wanted to go back to a rat race when it was over, or if they wanted to do something else. Still others sought others online, and if they were inspired to believe something new as "the truth" found themselves embracing it to the point of shutting out old friends and family in favor of true believers in cult-like devotion.
Do we still shame and ostracize someone who steps out of pre-selected norms. Perhaps the only restriction should be whether or not new belief causes us to harm or hate others. But then who makes that decision? Are we evolved enough to make our own?
Hope you all had a great holiday!
PAN: Chasing Pan: Tales From Neverland (Dark Fairy Tales Book 2) by S. Cinders is an "adulted" version of Peter Pan is set in a modern New York and in Neverland and all the pathways of time and space between. It's not Disney or Barrie, and not for kids. S. Cinders retells the tale of four couples long years after John, Michael and Wendy have returned to their world. You'll recognize names Peter, Tinkerbell, Hook and Tiger Lily, but also find Ebony, Smeed's son, Long John Silver all coming together and even falling in lust and love.
It's time to defeat old enemies, search for treasure and settle scores in true pirate fashion. in an attempt to save Neverland from destruction. There's a lot of sex, and equal portions of swordplay - a journey on the Flying Ship. Although some characters die, most carry on to a lovely HEA.
The story was fun and entertaining, but seemed to lose itself in the abundance of sex scenes with each of the four couples. Still fun and a great part of the series. https://www.amazon.com/Chasing-Pan-Tales-Neverland-Fairy-ebook/dp/B07BB4JBGM/

by Eva Pasco For anyone who grew up with either the movie or the book Wizard of Oz, this is an absolute treat.
This retelling is set in the present day and parallells many of our own high school experience. We all had that one teacher who changed our lives. Mine was a college professor.
In Eva Pasco's "Mr. Wizardo", he was a guidance counselor and teacher.
Four former students have returned "home" To Baxter Springs, Kansas for his funeral. They share stories of the ways in which he turned them around and helped them save themselves and each other. The novella becomes a celebration of a life full of meaning to those he influenced.
Eva Pasco artfully weaves characters very loosely based on Baum Originals. We share the stories of Doreen Gale, Scott Crowe, Lyle Forrest, and Tim Woodman follow that figurative yellow brick road to the future. Worth every word.
