Of Ferrets, characters and ancient Kings: Tom Speed's Katie, Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi, King Userk

Monday, April 2, 2018 is Ferret Day 2018. National Ferret Day:

A Guide To Ferrets As Pets up by National Ferret Day. 'A ferret is forever, not simply for stuffing down your trousers', as we are advised every Christmas, although to several ferret proprietors, that is life.

Ferret Day advertises the true virtues of this attractive, cuddly animal and furthers the welfare of ferrets everywhere.Ferrets are often kept as working pets, but also make loyal and satisfying companions. The standards of welfare, nourishment and treatment required for every coincides.

While ferrets do become attached to their owners, it is possible to leave them for short periods of time without ill effects. Make sure that when you do leave, she has items that smell like you, like a dirty t-shirt...socks etc. Also make sure the the person who is going to watch her is aware of the dangers ferrets can face in a home i.e. holes in walls, cupboards, washers and dryers they may crawl into, also any other pet in the home...especially dogs that may not be familiar with a ferret and may kill it thinking it is prey of some sort...

Last Fall I had the opportunity to write a short story for an Anthology Dreamtime Dragons produced by Dreamtime Tale Fantasy site on Facebook. All proceeds were to benefit Abington Ferret Refuge a Nonprofit Organization in Northampton, Northamptonshire England. I've only known two or three people who had ferrets as pets, but I guess more people in England have them and from time to time need to find better homes or living situations for their weasel-y friends.

Hilary Anderson, who was a contact for the group of Dreamtime Authors and owner of many rescued ferrets wrote this piece about ferrets and how important the anthology is to their welfare.

In the UK, ferrets have been kept as pets and working animals since Norman or even Roman times. These friendly creatures are totally domesticated - you do not get wild ferrets - and have had the hunting instincts bred out of them. Therefore, stray and dumped ferrets need rescue as soon as possible to survive.

These ferrets along with surrendered ferrets find their help in rescues such as Abington Ferret Refuge. Ferrets are surrendered for all the same reasons as other domestic pets - child lost interest; moved house and pets not allowed; not enough time: behavioural issues; and owner ill-health or death.

There are estimated to be around 1 million ferrets in the UK but the national rescues do not really cater for them with a few noble exceptions. Therefore, small independent rescues are vital. These are run, like Abington, by caring individuals who dedicate their time, emotion and money to helping ferrets in need.

Abington currently has 150 ferrets in care - they cost £300 a week to feed; £25 to castrate a hob (boy) and £50 to spay a jill (girl) putting aside other vet care. This is why help from this book is so important - to date, it has paid for 3 neuters. Ferrets are members of the mustilidid family, akin to badgers, weasels, otters and the very rare US black-footed ferret. They were domesticated from the European and Steppe polecats, small wild mammals that eat rabbits, mice and other rodents. The reason was to scare rabbits out of burrows into nets for humans to capture. A hunter did not want a ferret to kill - this means they eat, fall asleep and need to be dug out. Therefore ferrets with a lot of curiousity but no hunting instincts are prized. Sadly, this does not bode well for their survival if lost. A joke term for ferrets is "cat snake" or "fur noddle" - this describes their elongated body shape and playful temperaments quite well. Ferrets get a bad press as stinky vicious biters. But this is mainly a legacy of when they were kept at the bottom of gardens and only brought out to work. As with all animals, they repay tenfold the love you put into them. As to the reek, well yes entire male ferrets do stink - its how they attract the girls. But castration reduces the smell by about 95% and makes them good indoor pets--below is Gale - she is a pure EU polecat. Main differences between them are ferrets are crepescular, polecats are nocturnal. Polecats can see blue as well as the black, white and red ferrets are limited to and poleats are built like bricks compared to the svelte feel of a a ferret. EU = European polecat. She's one of mine from a friend who breeds and releases as they got hunted to extinction in England and are still extinct in Scotland. She has a small spinal deformity which is why she is a pet. Their eyes glow in the dark which is great when you need loo in middle of night and she is sitting in hall staring at you. Used to have a hybrid with pink eyes who basically glowed red in the dark and he couldn't resist biting you when pulse under skin. Called him my Golden vampire.

I was delighted to contribute my story "Ana's Dream of Flying" to this anthology and to have any earnings benefit these creatures in need. Many other fantasy authors wrote for the anthology too!

Here's our advertisement for the Anthology so you can read about dragons of all sorts and help out with cute and fuzzy ferrets.

Here's a 5 star Review

As a taster to a range of great authors, this book is an ideal starting place. Don't worry about the comment about sample chapters - these chapters are all stand-alone and won't leave you feeling cheated on a cliff's edge. I've read at least one book by each of these authors before and can say that the book is a fair reflection of their writing styles though it was rewarding to see some authors (waves to Mary) writing outside of her usual time and period and to get short stories to support the books from others (waves to Nils).

I think regardless of your choice in reading fantasy, there will be something to take your fancy - dragons come in modern, mythological, historical and epic fantasy modes. They are real, physiological and make your own mind up. Not all will have you for dinner but all are true dragons. It is hard for the author in this world where the big publishing houses seem to stick to tried and tested paths - it is very good to see authors provide handrails and ropes so people can explore the less well travelled paths. I hope you will join them and find hidden spots of wonder. As a bonus, all their profits go to an animal rescue - easier than splitting hopefully more than meagre profits between 12 authors and the 3 illustrators who have created a fantastic cover. Pity Guy Fawkes is past as reading of dragon while rockets bang and fill their air with smoke and flame was a bonus.

Speaking of reviews... Here's Another 5 star review of my own work Voices in Crystal (Andrew Cairns)

I enjoyed Mary R. Woldering's rich evocative writing in this story based on her research into ancient mythology. The action takes place in or around 'Kemet' - ancient Egypt, following the main character Marai - a humble shepherd as he encounters the mysterious Children of Stone, who arrive from the heavens. At first he takes them for the goddess Ashera, but soon finds out they are something else entirely, rejuvenating his body and sending him out on a mission to meet an enigmatic priest or his assistant. Soon after his encounter, he saves three women from slavery, and welcomes them as his 'wives'. The book is reminiscent of works such as Gilgamesh The King, Games of Thrones - the Dothraki, The Alchemist, or the tales from One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. Perhaps what is most original here is the way the author digs down deep into the motivations, desires and emotions of Marai and his companions. Recommended for fans of epic fantasy / mythology tales.

From History to Historical Fantasy

Last week I showed readers that I used characters from history to form some of the characters in my Children of Stone series. I described the character Hordjedtef who ended up being the villain. As stated, no one really knows what the real man was like, but if he wanted to be a villain in real like there was certainly enough reason: betrayal, jealousy, brilliance, bullying and intrigue. There was evidence he was worshipped after his death for about 100 years and then his tomb was defaced, signalling a failure of his reputation.

Also mysterious was the character of King Userkaf. That's me standing with him in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Mystically speaking, this little statue was one of the creators of the novelized version of some old noted a friend and I wrote in college. I had a character names Kazoser or Kafu-ser. who was the assistant of a high priest and later became a high priest himself and eventually a king.

I took my very young daughter (she's almost 34 now) to the museum to teach her about Egypt and to tell her a little bit of my story. Then I saw the little head and read the name Userkaf or Weserkaf first king of the 5th dynasty. The name caught me first because I knew Ancient Egyptian names could be read left to right or right to left interchangeably. The head focused my attention and seemed to say: START HERE. THIS IS IMPORTANT. My name for the priest who became a king was Kaf-user. On study I saw this, User-kaf was a high priest who became a king.

Out of this, the character came roaring into reality. The facts about him are scarce and his family and lineage very confused. He may have been a grandson of Djedefre by his daughter, Neferhetepes. Others thing that was his wife's name.

His father is unknown, but some think he was Userre, or Re-user a priest of Ra. Some believe his mother was Khentkawes. Others believe that was his wife. Sahure was his son and Kakai was either another son or a grandson

During his reign, Userkaf donated and reformed several royal domains in middle Egypt for the maintenance of the cult of Hathor. Userkaf also started the temple of Monthu at Tod, where he is the oldest attested pharaoh.

King Userkaf becomes Prince Wserkaf Lord Inspector of the Way OR How I transformed the character. After I was inspired by the little statue in the museum, I read what I could on Userkaf and built him into a hero who started out as a villain. His story is one of enlightenment and the realization of what truth and wisdom are really all about.

My character is son of Neferhetepes and grandson of King Djedephre. Wserkaf's father is Userre a priest of Ra who believes he and his royal wife are destined to be part of legend. Why he believes this is revealed in Book 4 Heart of the Lotus. Userre believes his wife will have triplets as legend states and that each will be king, but only Wserkaf is born. His parents name him from the Legend of the Three Kings (found years later in the Westcar Papyrus - This also has the backstory for Hordjedtef in The Magician's Tale) Rebelling against the dictates of this mythology, he runs away to study with a man his father and mother despise: Hordjedtef.

Wserkaf rises quickly to be his assistant by the time Marai and the women enter the scene. Through a number of bizarre happenings he realizes he has been manipulated all his life by this teacher. Once his eyes are opened he sees how much wicked influence the teacher has been using. What he learns shatters him and changes his life.

For the purpose of the story I have his wife as Khentkawes, mother of his sons Sahure and Kakai. She also has a business marriage to her brother the King Shepseskaf. It just works better that way.

His journey is to uncover and protect the secrets of the Children of Stone from the grasp of his former teacher without being caught, and to insure royal protection of Marai and his people. Through a series of incredible twists and turns he becomes a reluctant king, and founder of the 5th dynasty of kings From the pages of history and mythology to the pages of a book!

1. Who are you as a person? (brief bio paragraph)

Hello! My name is Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi, friends call me Andrew.

I am 40, and I live in European Union (Romania).

I have a regular job, I am IT Engineer and in my spare time I write books.

2. How long have you been a writer?

I became writer because I love the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre. I was a consumer like everybody, this means I watched movies, I have read books and I played video games, but one day I decided to create my own Sci-Fi universe. So was born the space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"©. I started to write since August 2016.

3. Are you Traditionally or Indie published? If not yet, what are you considering?

I published with KDP, but I am looking now for a traditional publishing house, because I think Amazon became a very crowded marketplace and my books could be lost like raindrops in an ocean.

4. What writers inspired you? Favorite Authors?

I read books from all genres and I like many authors.

On top are Arkadi and Boris Strugatsky, and J. R. R. Tolkien.

5. What is your book/series about (elevator speech or quick tweet post)

My book Starship "Apple of Discord"© describes the adventures of a man from Earth named Adam, who encounters advanced civilizations and technology.

6. What is the setting and genre?

As the title shows, Starship "Apple of Discord"© is a Sci-Fi book.

I started to write on a notebook my first novel since I was 20, but I was caught by the maelstrom of life and I postponed it. In the spring of 2016 I had peritonitis and I was in hospital for an intervention. Something went wrong because of the anesthetist, therefore I was in coma. When I woke up, it was autumn. During the recovery, I realized that the "right" moment will never come and I started to write again. I expanded my original novel to a space opera and I finished the first version on December 2016. I worked hard to improve my writing skills and I finished the first three volumes of Starship "Apple of Discord"© on November 11, 2017.

7. Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

I don't favor characters in my books, I let them to evolve then I let the readers to decide, which character deserves this title.

8. What character is most like you?

None of them. I was tempted to create the characters and the plot this way, but I thought if I would start to borrow bits of my life / others life to create my books, then I will never reach my goal to create genuine Sci-Fi stories or other genre, which I plan to write later.

9. If you had a supernatural power, what would it be?

This would be immortality. I want this, in order to reach the day, when humankind will travel to other stars and planets.

10. Would you say your book has a message or underlying theme? What is it?

Of course, I have such a message in my space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"©. Nobody is really alone. Everybody needs friends to survive and thrive.

11. How are you marketing your book?

Since I don't have the support of a publishing house or a big budget to speak of, I must dedicate a lot of my time to other activities than writing. I promote my work myself on social media and I scout for a publisher.

12. A wonderful thing has happened! Hollywood wants to make a movie of your book! You get to pick the actors & actresses. You want_ Lynn Collins, Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Travis Fimmel, Bruce Willis, Leonardo DiCaprio _for your lead characters.

13. What music do you hear (what songs) remind you of your story?

Jan Chmelar, Hans Zimmer

14. What Favorite foods

I love fruits and ice cream.

15. What makes you laugh/cry?

A good movie or book, or a special event could affect my mood.

16. What do you want written on your head stone and why?

"Dying is bad for you. Don't do it." - Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi

17. Other than writing do you have any hobbies?

I love to travel, to meet with my friends, to listen to music, to watch good movies or read books, to spend time with my family, especially my son. I have a little parrot and a cactus, and I take care of them too.

18. What TV shows/films do you enjoy watching?

I love both Star Trek and Star Wars. I watched other movie series too: Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Lexx, Farscape, Game of Thrones, Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, The Vikings, Big Bang Theory and many more. I like comedies, dramas, documentaries, Sci-Fi and Fantasy movies too. I watch an Youtube video channel called CinemaSins, so I have nightmares that one day my space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"© will be there too.

19. If you were not a writer what else would you like to have done?

I assume I would continue my career in IT. I would love to become a professional writer. I work hard to achieve this. However a day has only 24 hours and I must divide my time between my job, writing and my family.

20. What are you working on right now?

I started to work at the second part of my space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"©. I am confident that I will find a publishing house. I have other projects too. I plan to write another Sci-Fi novel called The independence, then Fantasy and children books.

21. How much research do you do for your novels? Bonus –what’s the weirdest thing you have Googled?

I used the Internet to search for scientific articles. I needed this in order to describe alien worlds and civilizations. I used knowledge from astronomy, physics, biology, chemistry, history, geography, sociology, psychology, computer science and xenology, which is the weirdest. Don't worry, my space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"© isn't boring at all! I am a storyteller and I used all these and my untamed imagination to create an entire Sci-Fi universe, which you will love it.

What’s the scariest thing you have ever done, and did it end up in a story? As I wrote before, I don't use my personal experience in my books. However there are many scary / funny parts in my space opera Starship "Apple of Discord"©. I would quote myself: “If you can’t provoke any emotion, there’s little point in writing.” – Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi

22. Name 5 fictional characters you would invite to a dinner party. Where would the party be?

I would like to invite to a fire camp Yoda, Tyrion Lannister, Chewbacca, King Kong, and Commander Data.
